It should be no surprise that lean fits so well with safety management improvement - for example, 5S creates an organised workplace with reduced slips, trips and falls, whilst exposing other hazards which are often hidden behind clutter or poor workplace layout. Root Cause Analysis Tools also work well when it comes to Accident and Incident investigations, as do visual management techniques which help to change unsafe behaviours on the shop floor or site.
The team at PHSS have developed a lean in safety toolkit. The toolkit utilises lean thinking and applies it to safety, for example by following the 5S lean tool methodology of Sort, Straighten, Scrub, Systemise and Standardise.
This lean system helps a business prepare from a business and operational perspective to manage safety in a lean context. The principles are built around lean tools and comprise of eight modules:
1 - 5S
2 - Visual Management
3 - Root Cause Analysis
4 - DMAIC
5 - Project Management Lite
6 - Critical to Safety
7 - Emergency Planning
8 - Business Continuity
